Why thermal DPI matters

Thermal printers place bars using fixed printer dots. At 203 DPI there are fewer size increments available than at 300 DPI, so a barcode that looks correct on screen may need its module width adjusted to land cleanly on whole dots. Free & Easy Barcode’s thermal workflow preserves whole-dot sizing instead of treating DPI as a cosmetic number.

203 DPI barcode labels

203 DPI is common on desktop and shipping label printers and works well for many normal barcode labels. Give the barcode enough physical width, preserve quiet zones, and avoid squeezing long values into very small labels.

300 DPI barcode labels

300 DPI provides finer print increments and can help with smaller labels or denser values. It does not remove the need for adequate quiet zones, readable module widths, or testing with the real scanner and label stock.

Thermal label workflow

  1. Create or load the barcode values.
  2. Select Thermal / Label Printer.
  3. Choose a preset or enter the exact label width and height.
  4. Select 203 DPI or 300 DPI, orientation, and outer margin.
  5. Choose label content such as barcode-only, product, price, sale, inventory, or retail tag.
  6. Prepare the label preview and use Auto-fit if the current content cannot fit safely.
  7. Download SVG/PNG or print/save PDF at 100% / Actual Size.

Test before volume printing: printer heat, speed, label stock, ribbons, worn print heads, and browser print scaling can all affect bar edges. Print a small sample and scan it with the actual device used in the workflow.
