Start with the physical label
- Print it larger. Bars that are too narrow can merge or disappear during printing.
- Restore the quiet zones. Leave clear blank space on both sides so the scanner can find the beginning and end.
- Use strong contrast. Dark bars on a plain light background are the safest choice; avoid reflective, patterned, or transparent backgrounds.
- Check for blur or damage. Ink spread, low-resolution screenshots, folds, scratches, and worn thermal heads can all change bar widths.
- Remove stretching. Do not drag an image to a different aspect ratio. Regenerate or scale it proportionally.
Check the barcode and its data
- Confirm the type. Some scanners are configured for only certain barcode families.
- Validate the value. UPC, EAN, and ITF-14 use fixed lengths and check digits. A graphic can look plausible while its data is invalid.
- Keep the encoded value clean. Look for unexpected spaces, punctuation, or unsupported lowercase characters.
Check the scanner and printer
Try the label with the actual scanner, not only a phone camera. Confirm the symbology is enabled and the scanner is appropriate for the expected distance and barcode density. For thermal printers, clean the print head and check heat, speed, ribbon, and label stock. A darker setting is not always better: excessive heat can thicken bars and close narrow spaces.
Isolate the problem: print one known-good sample and one new sample at the same size. If neither scans, check the scanner or print process. If only the new one fails, compare its type, value, quiet zones, and dimensions.
Before mass printing
Print a small trial on the final printer and stock, then test from realistic angles and distances. Barcode standards set different size and quiet-zone requirements, so follow the specification for the selected type when the workflow is regulated or high-volume.
